    5. [S419] Lancashire Evening Post, Mr. W. Dalgleish - Death at Preston of Old Carlisle Railman, 12 Feb 1934.
The death occurred at his home this morning of Mr. William Dalgleish (73), 27 Taylor-street, Preston.
He was sitting on the sofa in the living-room about eight o'clock, when he collapsed and died.
Just after his death a letter was received from Mr. William Gilbertson, the driver of the Royal Scot train, with whom Mr. Dalgleish was associated in many long-distance runs as gaurdsman and driver respectively. They were both natives of Carlisle.
Mr. Dalgleish retired from the railway about five years ago, and over a long number of years was associated with the Caledonian, the L. & N.W. and the L.M.S. Railway Companies. Actually Mr. Dalgleish started working at the age of eight years at a web weaving mill at Carlisle, and later, until the age of 15 1/2, was rural postman between Carlisle and Irthington, near Brampton, his duties involving an eight miles tramp each way.
It was in 1875 that he started work at the Citadel Station, Carlisle, then under the joint control of the L. & N.W. and the Caledonian Railway Companies.
Deceased leaves a widow and five daughters, four of whom are married.
