The date is 1809, the year of his marriage to Maria Collett. Inside is a handwritten list of family events, the first being details of the marriage, followed by details of the births and baptisms of their children.

Portrait by Walter William Ouless (1848-1933), University of Dundee, Tayside Medical History Museum Art Collection.
A committee of leading citizens in Dundee commissioned Ouless to paint Dalgleish’s portrait to be presented to the city, and this replica was commissioned by the board of directors at Dundee Royal Infirmary to hang in their board room.
