PLEASE NOTE: This site will close down soon. The data has been migrated to a new website Dalgleish One-Name Study; please visit the new site to see the most recent updates. Thank you.

The Dalgleish surname study looks at the surnames DALGLEISH, DALGLIESH and DALGLISH worldwide. A one-name (or surname) study is a project researching all occurrences of a surname, and is not restricted to particular families or family trees.

More information can be found on the study by following the links shown in the Resources section.

The name is considered to be locational, referring to the lands of Dalgleish, a remote area in Selkirkshire in Scotland, where the hamlets of Over Dalgliesh and Nether Dalgliesh can be found. In its survey of Scottih surnames in 2015, the Scotsman newspaper reported: "Scottish surname that comes from the Gaelic dail meaning ‘field’ and glaise meaning ‘brook’ or ‘stream’. The original spelling of the name was Dalgleish."

The spelling of names has not always been consistent and sometimes changed over time, even within the same family, both on official documents and in other sources, such as newspaper reports. Where possible, these spelling variances have been noted. However, if you cannot find the person that you are looking for, please do try alternate spellings.
